I like how pop music projects an image of pop singers, so that it creates such a disparity between the real person, when they're not a singer when they're at home, and the singer who's on stage, there's a very dualistic nature there, and I like to play with that for some reason. It's more about the reality of America that's interesting to me, actually the reality of every day life. I don't think it's that fascinating to me anymore,, because I've already explored that. In the same interview, when asked if the album was about the "American Dream" like The Family Jewels, she said: ĭiamandis also said: "I think I'm quite attracted to artifice, and to deconstructing artifice so I've been very inspired by it this album." Artifice is defined as "clever or cunning devices or expedients (a means of attaining an end, especially one that is convenient but possibly improper or immoral), especially as used to trick or deceive others." Marina has stated these songs are Lies, and Starring Role. It's refreshing!īut clarifying: "there are only two or three songs on the record specifically about that certain boy, but that experience set the tone for the whole album". Hence you become a heartbreaker - someone who screws other people over for fun. If you've had your heart broken, the last thing you want to do is go out there and give your heart to someone new, for fear of it happening again. In an interview with The National News, Marina explained how she was inspired to write the album after a relationship in which she felt "unwanted" and "unlovable", wanting to "personify love and the bitter misery of heartbreak", using the Electra Heart concept to "flip the situation around": Īt some point Marina then intended to do a side project under the name "Electra Heart," when she was told by her manager it wasn't possible, she merged the projects. Her initial idea for her second album was die Life, a "dark electronic pop record", with Marina joking it was something "Britney Spears would have made if she were goth." Her plans also including only working with one producer, potentially becoming "less commercial", as she didn't care if there were "no singles" off the album. In December 2009, prior to the release of The Family Jewels, Marina wanted to do a re-release like Lady Gaga's "The Fame Monster", however, this was quickly scrapped in favour of a full studio album.
